Staple wardrobe

Whilst many aspects of your wardrobe will change over time, there are other things that will remain the same. Your basic clothes shapes will often remain similar, after all; as long as your body shape doesn't go through any major upheavals the general cut of your clothes should still work.

In terms of basics it's well worth investing in key pieces – good quality trousers in a range of materials and cuts. T-shirts and vests too are good to stock up on. The main shape will very seldom change, and good quality garments should last you a few seasons.

Dress your age, not your mum's (or your daughter's)!

Don't forget, trying to remember how mature women dressed when you were younger will almost always lead to a major fashion faux pas. Just try to strike a middle ground, using others around you and similar aged celebrities for inspiration. Team classic cuts with more contemporary extras for an up to date look that is fitting for your age.

In fact dressing too old can be even worse than dressing too young. Don't forget fashion is one thing, but style is another thing entirely! Incorporate fashionable pieces alongside classic favourites and items that you feel are just "you". If you have a favourite belt that holds memories for you, and it will work with the latest fashionable top (worn tastefully of course) then it's the perfect outfit.

As we get older our possessions tell the story of how we got to where we are now, and if a few of those items can be incorporated into your wardrobe then all the better.

If you are not a regular tie wearer, practice tying your tie before your evening out, the simple rules to follow are to ensure the tie is the correct length at the front, it is supposed to reach the waist band of your trousers, if it doesn't, keep trying to achieve the optimum length.

Pocket Squares are now very popular, traditionally associated with businessmen, they add a touch of class to any jacket or blazer and they can be worn casually as well. There are some great silk pocket scarves available, but cotton may be more practical and versatile. Don't be afraid to use colour, rather than white, be adventurous.

In general, try to achieve some coordination with your pocket square and your shirt or tie. If patterned, it can be an exact match, but it doesn't have to be. As long as their maybe a background colour, but always aim for some colour coordination.

Spend some time on folding your pocket square correctly and you will be able to brighten up any outfit, while adding a touch of class.

British Elle Style Awards!

Last night were the awards in London and beautiful dresses and outfits came along, here are a few examples.

Naomi Campbell won the biggest prize of the evening of Outstanding Contribution to Style. The top model (she's also still doing well) contributed this price on her friend, fashion designer Alexander McQueen. Naomi received the award not only for her modeling career, for her commitment to the White Ribbon Alliance (an organization that fight complications of pregnancies worldwide.).

Another winner of the night: Twilight's Kristen Stewart. She took the Woman of the Year award home! What an honor.. Other prizes went to the pregnant Claudia Schiffer (won the Model of the Year) and also pregnant Dannii Minogue (sister of Kylie), it was the TV star award for her work for The X Factor. And Carey Mulligan was Actress of the Year.
