Yes, Accessorize!

Yes, Accessorize!

By Tammy Ussery

You have found your dream prom dress, now what? Now it is time to coordinate what is arguably the most important step of your prom ensemble- The accessories! Fabulous prom dress shops that carry everything from the dresses and accessories to undergarment accessories are ideal for one-stop shopping. Accessorizing your perfect dress with hair, makeup, shoes and accessories is the last step, and arguably the most exciting one!

Let the fun begin! One of the most thrilling parts of putting together an ensemble is hair. One basic rule of matching hair to a dress is an up-do for halter and one-shoulder necklines and hair down for strapless and spaghetti strap. Up-do's are generally expected for dresses that include the neck in the design, like halter and one-shoulder necklines, simply because having the hair down can muddle the design and crowd the neck space. The right up-do for you and your dress can vary greatly. You might want a glamorous up-do with all of your hair up, a glamorized ponytail, or half-up half down. If you have a detailed or a revealing, open back, your might want to choose to have a complete up-do to put that on display. Two exceptions for this rule is if you have short hair or if you will wear your hair sleek, straight, and pulled straight down your back. All down hairstyles have been all-the-rage for the past few years. The beautiful famous celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, and Katy Perry are all sporting fabulous long-do's. Pretty much any dress is deemed appropriate for wearing your hair styled down. The main deciding factor is personality. Girls with more of a classic, sophisticated, and or polished style and personality might prefer an standard up-do, while girls with more of a fun, trendy, and or free-spirited style and personality might prefer to wear the hair down. An ideal middle ground between an up-do and down style, is the half-up half-down style. There are many variations of the half-up half-down hairstyle, some with more hair up, as well as more hair down.

The element of your prom ensemble that is probably the most heavily reliant upon trends is makeup. Current trends recommend a focus on one key facial feature. Bold eyes are one trend where the eyes are the focal feature while keeping the face and lips neutral and simple. While the smokey eye continues to carry heavy influence in trends, another version of a classic bold eye is to do dark, bold lashes and a simple eye lid. More daring personalities might even prefer a bold color palette on their eyelids as another version of the bold eye. Another trend is to focus on the lip. A bold red lip is all-the-rage as well as classic and widely flattering on everyone. While the red can vary to pinks, or other shades, the rest of the face generally stays understated and neutral. One other focal feature is to have a strong eyebrow. The strong brow can be paired with a neutral lip, preferably with a gloss, and a eyes with bold lashes. It is always fun and exciting to get all-dolled up but it is important to let your natural beauty shine through!

Shoes are about as reliant upon your personality as they are your comfort level. With shoes, it can be easiest to take a cue from the dress. For example, if the dress is sexy, exotic, and has cutouts, it would be fitting to pair it with strappy sandals. If the dress is of a classic cut and color, it would be fitting to get a pump, either a peep-toe, close-toe, or a pump with a heel strap, or any combination of those options. High heels can be super sexy, and super painful. If you are not used to wearing high heels, it might be better to choose a shoe with a lower heel and with a lot of support at the heel and toes. Another step in accessorizing which takes a strong cue from the dress is jewelry. If the dress is heavily embellished then minimal jewelry is recommended. For a strapless sweetheart neckline dress, a drop necklace and simple earring works for an up-do. With no necklace, that same dress might call for long chandelier earrings with the hair either up or down. Bracelets and other assorted jewelry are based on personal preference. With accessories, you generally want to sparkle at every level of your body, take a cue from your dress, but remember: It's all about what you really want!

Cesar Chavez’s birthday

Amid all the big, dramatic news dominating the world today, observing Cesar Chavez’s birthday March 31 is a reminder of the power of simple, grass-roots organizing and years of persistent plugging away for justice.
We live in times when a government can be overthrown in a matter of weeks by a Twitter-organized popular uprising. It’s a little hard to imagine the decades-long dedication with which Chavez and his followers worked to change the mistreatment, physical danger and scandalously low wages endured by farm workers in this country.
Though conditions are still far from ideal in U.S. agriculture, there’s been immense improvement. And the fight continues to be fought with the tactics developed by Chavez and what is now known as the United Farm Workers Union. For instance, grass roots-organized boycotts were responsible for the recent victories by Florida tomato workers in getting higher price guarantees from major restaurant companies, bringing up wages a crucial few cents per bushel.
The grape and lettuce boycotts of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s led by Chavez were a core part of many Catholics’ introduction to the concept of practicing everyday social justice through their grocery purchases. Today such consciousness is played out in parishes around the country that ban plastic water bottles or that use and sell products like Catholic Relief Services’ Fair Trade coffee and chocolate.

Fashion Tips In Your Fifties

Fashion Tips In Your Fifties

People assume that finding your own sense of style is a one-time thing, that you identify your signature look and it stays that way. But once you get a bit older you realise your style has to evolve with you and stay both on trend and age appropriate. This fashion guide will help you to get the latest looks for Spring 2011 without dressing too young, or too old.

Staple wardrobe

Whilst many aspects of your wardrobe will change over time, there are other things that will remain the same. Your basic clothes shapes will often remain similar, after all; as long as your body shape doesn't go through any major upheavals the general cut of your clothes should still work.

In terms of basics it's well worth investing in key pieces – good quality trousers in a range of materials and cuts. T-shirts and vests too are good to stock up on. The main shape will very seldom change, and good quality garments should last you a few seasons.

Dress your age, not your mum's (or your daughter's)!

Don't forget, trying to remember how mature women dressed when you were younger will almost always lead to a major fashion faux pas. Just try to strike a middle ground, using others around you and similar aged celebrities for inspiration. Team classic cuts with more contemporary extras for an up to date look that is fitting for your age.

In fact dressing too old can be even worse than dressing too young. To avoid the "I've borrowed this outfit from my daughter" look go for slightly longer skirts (around the knee is perfect) and avoid anything that is too tight fitting. Most of us do this automatically, but it's always a good point to bear in mind. It's also important not to go in the other direction!

It's so easy to slip into bad habits as we get older. Despite the fact that these shapeless items will indeed hide age-related problem areas, there are often other ways to disguise them without resorting to constant long skirts and frumpy cardigans.

The wrap dress is an example of an ageless style that will show your curves. A perfect dress for a woman in her fifties features a short or three quarter length sleeve in a wrap style and falls to the knee. This style of dress will skim any bumpy bits, hide even the worst bingo wings and yet accentuate your waist. Plus it's the perfect way to incorporate the latest prints and colours into your wardrobe.

If you prefer small smatterings of print then opt for wide leg linen trousers and a simple top (add a bolero to vests if you're conscious of your arms), then wear bold accessories like chunky bangles or a stylish bag with more fashionable colours or designs. This will also save money on updating your wardrobe, as a few key pieces will go a very long way.

Show your personality

Don't forget fashion is one thing, but style is another thing entirely! Incorporate fashionable pieces alongside classic favourites and items that you feel are just "you". If you have a favourite belt that holds memories for you, and it will work with the latest fashionable top (worn tastefully of course) then it's the perfect outfit.

As we get older our possessions tell the story of how we got to where we are now, and if a few of those items can be incorporated into your wardrobe then all the better.

I Love Your Bag

Pick The Bag That's Best For You

By: Susan Arseneau

I remember when I used to believe that a purse was just a container to make it easier for women to carry all those necessities we feel we must have with us at all times – you know what I mean, the obvious items – wallet, checkbook, comb, brush……then there’s the add-ons – the make-up bag (just the essential items needed for quick touch-ups – foundation, cover-up, mascara, lip liner, lipstick, eye lash curlers, tweezers, 15 shades of eye shadow…..the necessities), the travel size hair spray, 5 containers of creams, curling iron, Kleenex, washcloth, spare pair of panty hose, cell phone, organizer…….I could go on I’m sure but I think most of you women are nodding your heads and laughing along with me at this point.Recently I was enlightened to the fact that a purse is meant to be so much more! Did you know a purse cannot only enhance your outfit, but can also flatter your body? I know!! I couldn’t believe it either! Here are some of the tips I have come across on how to pick a bag that is going to flatter your body:You can flatter you body by choosing a bag with a shape that is the opposite of your body type. If you are of the tall and thin variety a larger rounded, slouchy bag would best complement your look. If you are short and curvy a taller or rectangular shaped bag would be a great choice. The general tips are that the rounder your body type, the more structured shape bag would be the best complement to your figure. This does not suggest that you carry a perfectly square, hard box style of bag – just think along the lines of a more structured shape. Now, when it comes to the size of your bag, you should pick one more on proportion to your body rather than the opposite. If you are on the petite side you don’t want to be overshadowed by your bag, so stay on the small to medium size rather than the large slouchy style of bags.Purses come in so many sizes and shapes now that you will have no problem finding one that suits not only your needs, but complements your figure and style. At Bagz Beltz and Beyond we carry a huge selection of bags, purses, handbags and totes. We have small, structured clutches, medium sized structured handbags and hobos, as well as a great selection of large hobo, tote and messenger bags. You will have no problem finding the perfect shape and size for you! Your only problem will be which one to choose and what color. Remember, bags do not have to match your shoes!
