Patrick Swayze ends his treatment

Cancer-stricken star Patrick Swayze has given up medical treatment.

The 56-year-old 'Dirty Dancing' actor - who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year - reportedly abandoned chemotherapy and other treatment when doctors told him there was nothing they could do to stop the spread of his disease.

A family friend told the National Enquirer magazine: "There's nothing more doctors can do for him. We are down to the wire and the goal now is to keep Patrick comfortable.

"His condition is inoperable and they have stopped the chemo. He's still losing weight and he's very weak. He's taking morphine. That and the cigarettes seem to keep him functioning through the pain."

The actor, who recently said he was determined to fight his illness, was admitted to hospital with pneumonia earlier this month. He was released on January 16, but friends say the chest infection left the star weakened.

In a recent interview, Patrick spoke about his prognosis and his hopes for the future.
He said: "I'd say five years is wishful thinking. Two years seems likely if you're going to believe the statistics.

"There's more I want to do. Lots more. I want to last until they find a cure."

Patrick Swayze says he is recovering well from pneumonia.

The actor, who has pancreatic cancer, was hospitalised last Friday.

He contacted his doctor after having a persistent cough.

'I wanted to jump on it before it turned into a problem.

'As soon as I got home, I called my doctor and then went straight to the hospital and was immediately put on antibiotics.'

But Patrick, 56, is confident he'll be back on his feet soon.

'I am alive and plan on continuing to stay that way,' he tells People. 'I don’t plan on being in the hospital long. I am almost in the clear now.’

Patrick Swayze has pneumonia and checked himself into the hospital

Patrick Swayze has pneumonia and has checked himself into a hospital for observation, it was revealed Friday at a press event for the Television Critics Association in Los Angeles.

"As we arrived here this morning we have some news," said A&E president Abbe Raven. "Patrick Swayze has checked himself into the hospital. However, he asked us specifically to go forward with today's panel. We wish him the very best with his recovery."

Bob DeBitetto, the president and general manager of A&E, delivered the news that Swayze had decided to check himself into the hospital after he came down with pneumonia.

Swayze, who is battling pancreatic cancer, had been expected to discuss his new show, The Beast, scheduled to begin airing Jan. 15.

'He's still fighting'
"Patrick is undergoing treatment and he's still fighting," a source close to the star tells PEOPLE. "He felt so bad that he couldn't be at the TCAs. He's fighting and doing well, and that's all anybody can hope for at this stage. He is not at death's door. Nobody ever knows with cancer, but he's doing alright. As soon as he's out, he's going to try to reschedule as much as he can.

Adds another source close to the situation, "He knows he's not a miracle. There's only so much he can do. He needs to take care of himself, so he checked himself in to get the help he needs."

During an interview that aired Wednesday on ABC, the actor told Barbara Walters that his road has been difficult. "You can bet that I'm going through hell," he said. "And I've only seen the beginning of it."

Swayze, 56, who went public with his diagnosis last March, said the disease has taken an emotional toll. "There's a lot of fear here," he said. "Yeah, I'm scared. Yeah, I'm angry. Yeah, I'm [asking], why me."

Despite his difficult year battling cancer, Swayze is still looking ahead. "I keep dreaming of a future, a future with a long and healthy life," he said, "not lived in the shadow of cancer, but in the light."

Colleagues Praise Patrick
At the TCA event in L.A., Swayze's colleagues on the show opened up about the actor's personal struggle. "[He's] been an absolute inspiration, he's an amazing guy," said costar Travis Fimmel. "He makes the little things seem not important."

Bill Rotko, creator of The Beast, said: "Although you forget sometimes that Patrick's going through treatment for cancer, it brings you very close together. There's a tremendous amount of respect going on."

Beast executive producer John Romano added that Swayze gives the show 100 percent. "He's bringing the force of his own personal struggle into the performance," he said. "He does it five days a week, 12 hours a day."

Patrick Swayze's Fight For Life

Patrick Swayze may be dying, but he is not going without a fight. Remember Dalton in Roadhouse? Smart and strong? Swayze embodies his character in real life too with action, not bravado.

In his recent interview with Barbara Walters on ABC he revealed that not only is he not on his deathbed (which we all at PCM have been reporting), he has gone as far as to refuse pain killers while working a hard work schedule (TV Series "The Beast") on top of his pancreatic cancer treatment.

He is quick to report he is not dying. Not now. "Am I dying? Am I giving up? Am I on my death bed? Am I saying goodbye to people? No way," he told Barbara Walters.

He is clear on his passion to live too: "I keep dreaming of a future, a future with a long and healthy life, not lived in the shadow of cancer but in the light," he said. Despite his positive outlook on life, he admits he may only have two years to live. He wants to live long enough to find a cure. Many have reached out to Swayze suggesting he can go for a liver transplant which could extend his life by 18 years.

The Media Wants Patrick Swayze Dead

A couple weeks ago we at Pop Culture Madness reported how many of our fellow media reporters are calling these the last days of Patric Swayze. It appears the media wants him dead despite his heroic effort at recovery. In his own words, "They're reporting that I'm on my last legs and saying goodbye to my tearful family! ... It's upsetting that the shoddy and reckless reporting from these publications cast a negative shadow on the positive and good fight I'm fighting."

His new show The Beast is set for release January 15th and Patrick is reportedly benefiting from the work. His health is improving. His will to beat pancreatic cancer is important. It's important to so many people afflicted with this condition. Hope is a very powerful thing and for the media to circle like vultures is sick.

I personally speculated that Patrick was being used by his own studio to play into his character on the show The Beast. In retrospect, I feel that even I became caught in the trap of discussing his condition rather than his hope and how he is living. My truest hope now is that my original speculation is very wrong. It's one time I want to be wrong. Go Patrick!

Patrick Swayze's 'hellish' cancer

Patrick Swayze admits having cancer has been "hell on wheels".

The 'Dirty Dancing' actor - who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the beginning of this year - insists the chemotherapy treatment he has been receiving is the most gruelling experience of his life.

He said: "It's a battle zone I go through. Chemo, no matter how you cut it, is hell on wheels. But I'm still fine to work, I haven't changed - oh, I have changed, what am I saying?"

Swayze, 56, first became worried about his health last December when he had persistent indigestion and was feeling ill on a regular basis.

He explained to the New York Times newspaper: "After that all of a sudden real symptoms started showing up. You see it in the mirror and you go, 'OK better go get checked out.' "

While the veteran actor, who has been undergoing pioneering Cyberknife radiotherapy at California's Stamford University Medical Center, is making a remarkable recovery from the illness, doctors cannot yet say he is completely free of the cancer.

Swayze is currently shooting TV drama 'The Beast', and has gained around 20lbs on a diet comprised mainly of fruit and vegetables and muscle-building milkshakes.

When he was originally diagnosed with deadly disease, Swayze was reportedly given just weeks to live.
