Richard Gere: I thought I'd be dead by the time I was 30

Actor wasn't very optimistic about his future

Richard Gere has revealed that he was convinced he’d die young.

The actor, who turns 60 next year, assumed he'd pop his clogs in his 20s.

‘I thought I’d be dead by the time I was 30, so the fact I’ve lasted this one amazes me,’ Richard tells Metro.

‘When I was shooting The Hunting Party in Sarajevo, the film crew did a press conference to introduce ourselves to the community.

'There was a very shy young girl sat at the back who raised her hand. She said: “On behalf of 3 generations of my family I’d like to thank for you continuing to make movies.”

'I thought: “How sweet.” Then I thought: “I’m really old!”’
He has been married to actress Carey Lowell for 6 years. They have 8-year-old son Homer.

Richard’s new film Nights In Rodanthe starring Diane Lane, 43, is out now.

'Nights In Rodanthe' Premiere

Diane Lane and Richard Gere posed for the paparazzi at the New York City premiere of their new movie, “Nights in Rodanthe,” held at the Ziegfeld Theatre. Both actors looked great - Lane wore a merlot-colored dress while Gere wore a casual black pinstripe suit.

In "Nights in Rodanthe," Oscar nominee Diane Lane stars as Adrienne Willis, a woman with her life in chaos, who retreats to the tiny coastal town of Rodanthe, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, to tend to a friend's inn for the weekend. Here she hopes to find the tranquility she so desperately needs to rethink the conflicts surrounding her -- a wayward husband who has asked to come home, and a teenaged daughter who resents her every decision. Almost as soon as Adrienne gets to Rodanthe, a major storm is forecast and a guest named Dr. Paul Flanner (Richard Gere) arrives.

The only guest at the inn, Flanner is not on a weekend escape but rather is there to face his own crisis of conscience. Now, with the storm closing in, the two turn to each other for comfort and, in one magical weekend, set in motion a life-changing romance that will resonate throughout the rest of their lives. So romantic! The movie hits theaters on Sept. 26th.
