Nicolette Sheridan is leaving Desperate Housewives, US network ABC confirms.

The actress has played Edie Britt in the hit show since 2004.

Producers are yet to reveal when or how Nicolette will be written out of the program.

But US reports have hinted her character could be killed off.

Last season, Edie moved from Wisteria Lane – only to return when the show moved forward five years.

Nicolette, 45, split from fiancé Michael Bolton, 55, in August 2008.

Nicollette Sheridan calls off engagement to Michael Bolton

Nicollette Sheridan and Michael Bolton have called off their engagement.

The 'Desperate Housewives' actress and the 'How Am I Supposed to Live Without You' singer - who have had an on-off relationship since 1992 - split "amicably", according to Nicollette's representative.

Nicole Perna revealed to People magazine: "Nicollette Sheridan and Michael Bolton have amicably ended their engagement. They appreciate your respect for their privacy in this matter."

The 44-year-old actress and her 55-year-old beau had originally started dating in 1992 but split after five years together. They reunited in 2005 and announced their engagement in March 2006.

Upon announcing their wedding plans, Nicollette said: "Michael is a wonderful human being. He has brought me a profound love and support. He is an amazing sounding board for me.

"I am the happiest now I've ever been in my life, feeling more grounded than I ever have. For me there's only been one person, and that's Michael."

Michael added: "Nicollette and I are very serious about each other. I am very committed. It is a very special time in my life. I have a good feeling about the future."

Nicollette was previously married to actor Harry Hamlin. Michael has three daughters with ex-wife Maureen McGuire, who he divorced in 1990.

Dodgers fan Nicolette throws first pitch at Major League clash

Worthing-born Nicolette joined the ranks of celebs - among them Victoria Beckham - who've undertaken the honour of throwing the ceremonial first pitch in the past

There was an all-American day out in store for West Sussex-born baseball fan Nicolette Sheridan this week, as she was honoured with the task of throwing the first pitch when her team the Los Angeles Dodgers took on the San Francisco Giants.

The actress took to the field in a white vest top bearing the name of Dodgers manager Joe Torre for her duties at the Major League clash.

Sporty Nicolette is presumably hoping to score a home run herself when the 3D animated adventure flick Fly Me To The Moon, for which she provides one of the voices, hits US cinemas in August.

And, despite the fact that her man-eating character Edie waved goodbye to Wisteria Lane at the end of last season, she's also lensing a new series of Desperate Housewives. "Edie will come back to Wisteria Lane in a very surprising way," says show creator Marc Cherry. "We're not telling you any more than that."

Celebrity News: Nicolette Sheridan Pregnant?

Nicolette Sheridan is reportedly pregnant with her first child.

The 'Desperate Housewives' star - who is engaged to singer Michael Bolton - is thrilled after discovering she is expecting.

A show source said: "She's absolutely glowing and her pregnancy is the buzz of the set."

The 43-year-old actress has been asking her co-stars Marcia Cross and Felicity Hoffman for advice on pregnancy and motherhood.

The source added: "She kept asking Felicity and Marcia about how the pregnancy would change her appearance and if it would make her hair thinner."

Nicolette - who got engaged to Michael in March 2006 - recently revealed her desire to become a mother, even though she has a hectic lifestyle.

She said: "I don't know how I'd have time to deal with it, but being a mom is so special. Of course, if it happened, I would just make time!"

Michael, 53, already has three daughters from his marriage to Maureen McGuire.

Nicolette and Michael first dated in the 90s and rekindled their romance in 2005.
