Community Cleanup

Schedule a community cleanup day with the kids. You might focus on an area such as school grounds, your neighborhood or a community garden area. Cleaning up the local area helps the environment and creates a sense of community with the kids and other residents.



Garden

Planting seeds or plants on Earth Day is a natural option for kids' activities. The type of plant depends on the area. If space allows, plant a tree or large vegetable garden. Growing your own vegetables lets you eliminate the use of chemicals.



Toy Swap

Throwing away old toys results in more waste in the landfill. Instead of tossing the toys that are boring, help the kids organize a toy swap. Each child brings her old toys that she no longer wants, and the kids swap toys with one another. That way, each child goes home with different toys, and nothing ends up in the landfill.



Pledge

Earth Day offers an opportunity for kids to think about their own actions and how they impact the earth. Help the kids create an Earth Day pledge that states what they promise to do to keep the earth clean while protecting the environment. Have each child sign the pledge.



Green Committee

A kids' green committee puts the responsibility in the hands of the children. This idea works well in a school setting or other situation when a group of kids meets regularly. The green committee monitors the school to make sure the other kids are making green choices. They also find new ways to make the school green, such as adding recycling bins or planting flowers.

Celebrating Earth Day!

Earth Day should be celebrated everyday because the Earth is Beautiful! As a celebration to our spectacular Earth I want to share a few of my favorite drinks, which include one cocktail and three organic drinks. The Greentini cocktail ( make it earth friendly by substituting it with organic vodka), and for the organic drinks I like: Pom-aniac, Organic Globe Drink and finally The Planetary Punch. The pom-aniac drink is so refreshing and delightful! Pomegranate, lemon and cucumber come together with a harmonious bitter campari....um um!!
You'll enjoy the Organic Globe as the simple syrup along with the organic vodka and orange juice make a delightful drink to celebrate this beautiful day.
Finally the Planetary Punch is the absolute of all favorites as we celebrate the Earth with it's tropical delights.

2 ounces 360 vodka
1.5 ounces melon liqueur
Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass
Garnish with a lime wedge



Organic Drinks

Big, brassy pomegranate and lively lemon find a counter beat in smooth maraschino cherry and cool cucumber, but it's that crucial splash of bitter Campari that really makes this symphony of flavors come together in delicious harmony.

1 thin peeled organic cucumber round, quartered
2 ounces organic pomegranate juice
1 1/2 ounces Square One organic vodka
1/2 ounce freshly squeezed organic lemon juice
1/2 ounce organic agave nectar
Splash of Campari
1/2 ounce maraschino liqueur or Cointreau
Club soda or sparkling mineral water
Organic lemon twist for garnish


In a tall glass, alternate the pieces of cucumber with layers of crushed ice. Pour the pomegranate juice, Square One organic vodka, lemon juice, agave nectar, Campari, and maraschino liqueur into an ice cube-filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds, then strain the mixture into the glass. Top off with club soda and garnish with the lemon twist.





Organic Globe Drink Recipe


2 oz Vodka Organic (Square One)
1 oz Ice wine
.5 oz Fresh Orange Juice

1 oz Simple Syrup



Planetary Punch

Ingredients:
•1 1/4 oz 360 Vodka
•3/4 oz melon liqueur
•1/2 oz peach puree or daiquiri mix
•1 oz orange juice
•1 oz pineapple juice
•maraschino cherry for garnish
Preparation:
1.Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
2.Shake well.
3.Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
4.Drop a cherry into the glass for a garnish.

To commemorate Earth Day yesterday the world's most popular board game announced the addition of renewable energy utilities on the Monoploy Here & Now: The World Edition Game Board!

Recognizing the increasing importance of renewable energy sources around the world, MONOPOLY announces that it will feature “Wind Energy” and “Solar Energy” as the utilities in the upcoming MONOPOLY Here & Now: The World Edition game. The new utilities will replace the “Water Works” and “Electric Company” spaces that traditionally appear on the MONOPOLY game board.

“When creating this first-ever worldwide MONOPOLY game board, we reviewed all elements of the game to ensure that it reflects today's global perspective. This included the utility property spaces,” said Phil Jackson, Group Executive, Hasbro Games. “In a nod to the efforts of countries worldwide to increase the effectiveness and availability of renewable energy sources, we decided to feature Solar Energy and Wind Energy on the game board.”

Globally, wind energy and solar energy are among the fastest growing renewable energy sources. According to the World Wind Energy Association, wind energy generates more than 1 percent of global electricity and is used in more than 70 countries. Solar power continues to grow in popularity as an energy source, with Germany, Japan and the United States leading the world in solar energy capacity. Additionally, rooftop solar heat collectors provide hot water to more than 50 million households worldwide.

In early 2008, MONOPOLY fans from around the world voted for the global cities that they would like to see represented on the first-ever World edition game board. More than 5 million votes were cast during the voting period to determine the 22 cities that will be featured on the game board. The results of the worldwide vote will be announced in August 2008. The new MONOPOLY Here & Now: The World Edition will be available in stores around the world in Autumn 2008.

The official MONOPOLY board has long represented elite locations in individual cities. However, recently Parker Brothers invited fans of the game to help update the board in their respective countries to reflect what the game board would look like if it were created today instead of in 1935. The votes resulted in the “Here & Now” versions of the game in each country. Previous “Here & Now” editions have featured “Cell Phone Service” and “Internet Service” instead of the Water Works and Electric Company utility spaces.
