Avril Lavigne cancels tour dates

Canadian singer Avril Lavigne cancelled two tour dates last week and six more upcoming shows in California and Washington due to acute laryngitis.

"My sincerest apologies to all of my fans," she wrote in a MySpace message. "My intention was to complete the rest of the tour but tonight at sound check in Anaheim I realized this wasn't possible. Even though I have been resting my voice for days, when I tried to sing nothing came out."

Lavigne said the flu and feeling "run down" caused her to cancel her earlier shows.

"I have never cancelled a show in my whole career and just had to for the first time ever. This sux!" she wrote on MySpace Thursday.

Lavigne will hit the United Kingdom next, with her first stop in Glasgow May 26. Her Best Damn Tour began in March and ends in August.

The Rubinoos filed a lawsuit against Avril Lavigne, claiming her hit "Girlfriend" blatantly ripped off their 1979 song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend."

"You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know the songs are the same," said Jon Rubin, Rubinoos lead singer who is not part of the lawsuit.

This isn't the first such accusation Lavigne has faced. Fellow Canadian singer and labelmate Chantal Kreviazuk told Performing Songwriter magazine in June 2007 that Lavigne stole one of her song titles.

"Avril will also cross the ethical line, and no one says anything," Kreviazuk said in the interview.
