WASHINGTON - minutes before the deadline in the middle of the night, President Barack Obama in the law, signed over the four years after the September 11 powers to search records and eavesdrop on telephone calls roving in pursuit of terrorists.
"This is an important tool for us to continue to deal with the continuing terrorist threats," Obama said Friday, after meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Obama in France, the White House said the president was using the pen automated machine that holds the pen and sign a real signature. This is used only with the necessary authority to the President.
Congress sent the bill to the President with only a few hours before going to the provisions of the expired Thursday at midnight.
