I think that the iSight was designed more for communication between business travelers and their families. That's what all their ads showed.

wow! so much anger!?
I saw this coming since Apple announced the A4. If there is one thing Apple likes, it's control. That is exactly what they get with the A4/A5 processors.

As Rosius forced the gargantuan double doors open, the ground rumbled with the weight of the doors scraping the floor.
Before the group is a huge entrance, the far walls barely perceptible in the darkness. "We go in," Rosius stated once again as he led the way into the mansion.
The moment the last foot left the earthy ground and settled on the marble floor, the gargantuan doors screamed and slammed shut behind the group. Only Rosius was unfazed, shouting "it matters not! We are not leaving without the Artifact!"
Lamps suddenly lit up around the room, the flames waving gently in the wind that came from the outside and trapped.
"YOU DARE ENTER MY DOMAIN!"
The booming voice shook the floor. Again, only Rosius was unfazed. "I have come to slay you! Your evil will be short-lived!" shouted the Wizard.
Only laughter replied the Wizard's words, booming around the room, coming from everywhere and nowhere at once.
***
The heroes explores the room. The Entrance is a huge room with columns at each sides leading to several stairs at the far end of the room. There seems to have been a throne upon the top of the stairs, but nothing is there. Instead, something is glowing on the floor near the leftmost edge of the platform.
YOU HAVE FOUND A HEALING TREASURE. IT HAS NO EFFECT.
YOU MOVE THROUGH THE TOP RIGHT DOOR INTO A HALLWAY.

It's good to see the debate on the best delivery mechanism for large software releases such as this; there are clearly benefits for Apple to push it through the infrastructure they already have in place.
In my opinion, this is just another nail in the coffin for Apple resellers. Not content with giving single-digit margins on hardware, Apple is now actively removing another method of generating revenue. Software has better reseller margins (~15-20%) than hardware, but Apple's progress with the App store has seen key applications (iWork, iLife) on there for a substantial discount.
There are no reseller/affiliate arrangements for the App store, and resellers can't compete with their discount offerings (as Apple set both wholesale and retail pricing). As a result, resellers business will be affected, and continue to be affected if they continue down this path.

Lion this summer, iOS 5 this fall. Makes sense to me :)
I have predicted this from the moment Apple said Lion will be out this summer! There is NO WAY they could get them both done that fast!
I just forked over 750 dollars for an ipad 2 and ipad 3 is coming out? Ouch!!! I already want it.
sounds plausible, but i really don't see iPad 3 coming out any time this year. it's way too soon
Don't listen to the iPad 3 rumors. It is all FUD to try to slow iPad 2 sales!
A new ios update is like getiting a new device so i hope itis amazing and is a major revamp
What's going to happen is iPad 3 will be next year as normal, but before the holidays Apple will release iOS 5 and the iPad 2 will be like a brand new product again! I have predicted this for a long time now too!
Lion, iOS5, and the new MobileMe are going to bring continuous client features across all of Apple's products! :D And here's to hoping for apps on the Apple TV this fall too!!!
The question is when are they going to show off the new MobileMe??? The new data center was already supposed to go live and now they are saying spring. :(

All Apple did was created a premium brand. Technology was cheap and affordable in the MP3 market. You could pick up an MP3 player for under a $100 bucks until Apple came into the market with its $300 dollar iPod.
And you still can buy MP3 players that are far cheaper than what Apple offers.
Apple did not come to dominate this market with cost competition. They did it by providing a better overall consumer experience. If you judge by specs, you'd buy a Sansa instead of an iPod. However Joe Consumer doesn't care about specs.

How odd. I know a lot of people with iPhones and absolutely nobody with an Android based phone.
One thing to keep in mind is Android is just an OS and Google makes nothing on it. Meanwhile, back on the ranch, iPhone/iOS is an entire platform and Apple makes a lot on it. Android is fragmented. iOS is unified. Android is made up of many vendors each with a much slimmer part of the pie. iOS is Apple with a huge piece of the pie. So in the end, iOS is far ahead.
Besides, there's iPad and iPad2 which makes the whole thing moot.

Since I have been using the app store more and more, I do not miss the cd method. However for an OS to do a clean install, you must have a disk/physical media. Linux distributions give you an ISO that you must mount or burn to disk.
I think Apple is doing it this way to cut down on the ability to make hackintoshes.
Here is what I think. Since the new IMacs have the ability for a SSD plus hard drive - I think in the future all macs will have it build into the bootup the option to hit the app store and download the OS without the need to have an OS already loaded. Would be nice if upgrades would backup and fresh install everything for you automatically since 90% of apps will be bought through the app store. Just click, wait an hour or more and come back to a fully usable system.

Pretty confident (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=11923858&postcount=88) there won't be an iPhone 5 this summer. The CDMA phone was just launched. It really doesn't make sense to stagger the releases (CDMA in winter, GSM in summer); it makes much more sense to unify the devices. We don't want fragmentation, do we? But no way in hell it's going to happen four months after the CDMA launch. This makes as much sense as launching an iPad 3 in the so-called "year of iPad 2".

This seems like an inevitable move in the convergence of iOS devices and Mac computers. They will eventually be the same thing. Powerful, robust, thin, power efficient, easy to use touch interface. Lion is moving in the direction of the iPad and iOS in general. The iPad has been gaining more Mac-like features and robust applications. I think the time tables are probably off. I don't see this happening for 4 to 5 years at the earliest. But with billions upon billions in cash reserves, Apple can pretty much do whatever they want!

Apple doesn't have a problem collecting 30% for completely stupid useless app store purchases, but they have a problem with making your iPhone look completely stupid?
Hmmm. Pot, meet kettle.
Useless app store purchases?
Based on what? How are they useless? This entire market is based around an app ecosystem. Apps are in demand. Apps help move hardware.
Your post makes no sense.

You contradict yourself here. A 27" iMac is probably already retina, considering the viewing distance should be around 30" away.
As the distance grows, the PPI treshold to achieve the "retina" effect of "Eye can't distinguish the individual pixels" becomes lower. Given enough distance, 48 PPI can be enough to be dubbed "retina display" (your standard 50" 1080p TV).
No, you're not wrong. But I'm not either. I'll let you figure out why (think about the lower case b in Mbps vs MB of RAM ;) ). Unless I'm misinterpreting something, I doubt DP 1.2 can push out 21 gigaBYTES of data per second...
As for the 6990 listing that as max resolution, I'm betting that has more to do with current LCD display limitation (that is the max resolutions you'll find on an LCD monitor) than with actual hardware limitation. The hardware is capable of more than that. Some of these cards with a single GPU have 2-4 DP outputs capable of driving 2-4 of these 2560x1600 monitors. The GPU itself doesn't a problem pushing out these pixels and DP 1.2 makes it so they can push it over a single connection.
Sony was there first with the Vaio Z. 13.3", 1920x1080 baby. If it weren't so expensive it would be mine and I'd be back to running Linux.
Thanks, a 'duh' moment for me.
However, ati does list the 6990 as having a maximum display resolution of 2650 x 1600 per display though it can handle up to 6 displays. There will have to be a change somewhere. (Though you could probably write a program that would allow this resolution). That is still going to max out thunderbolt so you would not be able to drive one of those displays at native with a macbook pro.

PDA Phones aren't "on the way out", but the problem is, manufacturers haven't figured out how to give the public what they really want in one.
Palm may not be so foolish with their statement discounting Apple, only because they're probably right that Apple isn't really going to put a dent in their particular market.
I've seen so many realtors, insurance agents, company CEO's, and other traveling salespeople relying on Treo phones every day, and it's largely because they need the PDA functionality plus the cellphone.
Most realtors in my area can use the IR port on a Treo to automatically open the lock-boxes on properties they want to show, for example.
If Apple releases an iPhone, I think they'll be concentrating on good integration of the cellphone and a music player ... not so much a PDA, a la the Newton.
The problem with Palm is they are on their way out. They got what? Treo? How long can that last? PDAs are over. So it's all about the phones now.
They have to be worried. Apple has the midas touch. Whatever Apple get's into they change. Apple has a way of innovation that changes all of the dynamics. They weren't the first with the iPod, but their entrance into digital music has changed the whole music industry, not just digital music players.
Apple could very well do the same thing with an Apple branded phone. Integrating it into the whole computer experiance in ways we can't even predict. To claim it takes years to make a phone "right" is just proof that Palm has very little to offer.
The future of phone technology is going to change rapidly and dramically over the next few years. Apple can make billions of dollars in this market. They are going to go for it, and they will leverage their existing products to make it happen and to offer something new. Everyone is fixated on the iPod, but it's the integration with OS X that has the most interesting potential.
Video iChat on your phone? Internet services? Email? Address? Calendar? Have you used a Palm or Blackberry? They are OK for what they do, but they could be so much better...a lot better. What they are missing is exactly what Apple has to offer -- and it isn't music.

I've been running Sophos (the real version, 7.2.3, not this new free version) for years and years and years and never had problems with it, and yes I'm a Mac user, and yes it has detected files with problems. So the stick-your-head-in-the-sand approach advocated by some here seems silly.
1) I have no problems with my Time Machine backup at all, ever. However mine is a USB backup and not airport, and it isn't a Time Capsule. Perhaps those impact whether it works well or not. So just saying "It doesn't work with Time Machine" as some have stated here, is not accurate.
2) Someone way back in the thread mentioned that their appearance settings randomly reset. Interesting. I have been having this problem for months (appearance and trackpad settings randomly resetting to default) on my Macbook Pro. I've trashed prefs, and done all the other usual things one does when wacky things happen. Yet it still happens, seemingly randomly. I'll keep an eye open for whether Sophos is doing something when that happens. Perhaps that's the cause I've ben looking for!
