I wouldn't mind seeing a change in the Macbook line from the white plastic to a dark cf or lm, or whatever like the current menu bar on Apple's website. Right now the MB is lagging behind both the MBA and MBP. I don't really know what it does I say ax the super drive, put in more storage and have a 14.5 inch and 16.7 inch models to fill the gap between MBPs with a Core i3 processor and integrated graphics starting at $799. Keep it thin and light w/ USB 3.0 and lots of battery like the MBA. That would be perfect for those of use who just use the internet, music, and right lots of papers.

Just be sure to invest in anti-static screen roller. Once you've taken the glass off, it's almost impossible to get it back on without being left with a speck of dust trapped between the LCD and glass. 27 inch is twice as frustrating

    Good point.

Biggest problem with Veloster: it needs a more powerful engine. Maybe Hyundai will see it fit to install the 173 bhp 2.4-liter I-4 found on the current Kia Forte, which would give the Veloster a needed performance boost. :)

"We view this as a positive for Apple as this indicates that the US market has some degree of market acceptance of converged cell phone-MP3 player and that a product of mediocre quality like the LG Chocolate phone can still do very well," he wrote.

I think that's not correct. Some people need more than 128GB you know. Yes, you can carry an external drive but then why not carry a larger machine with more internal storage?

The 1366x768 resolution can be limiting. For example, Apple's own Server Admin software will barely show the summary page at 768 pixels tall. The bottom row of graphs are tiny squished things at the bottom. It's clearly not meant to run on this small a display. And it's a perfect example of something you would want on a small carry it anywhere Mac.

    Like I was saying...

Well, heck -- looks like my MWSF is going to be very brief this year, as I have to go down to LA Wednesday the 10th through Friday the 12th. I'm going to have to cram everything in on Tuesday the 9th. So much for a leisurely stroll through the halls -- it's going to be a real hit-and-run affair this time.

WOW, I really feel like MS have screwed me now, moves like this do not make your fanbase feel too good and it does not strike much confidence in people either. Seems to ms that instead of just making a console and going with it, >S are doing a thing like "See we can do that as well Sony", seems a little childish to me.

Yeah, except they forgot to include HD-DVD. :p

Microsoft is falling into Sony's little trap: they've got the advantage of making a profit because Sony's got a higher priced console, BUT Sony's also losing money for us consumers. Once everyone realizes that, and adds the prices up for the things the 360 is missing (such as wireless and HD-DVD), man does a PS3 seem like an incredible value. Not only that, the 1.6 update really kicks the PS3 up a notch in functionality. They've also got a greater variety of games coming out...We'll see how this turns out.

And really, I feel really sorry for the people that bought a 360 only a couple months ago...It's a shame that Microsoft has to be childish.

I just got done reading Hackers and then Revolution in the Valley, so I recognize samcraig's complaint about a walled garden as something Apple has dealt with since its inception with the Apple ][ being Woz's exception to what soon became a standard complaint about the company.

I understand the desire to have people know how things work. That's the hacker ethic. Hackers want to understand what makes things tick. That's a very useful skill. I applaud it. As someone who knows how to fix my car, and who has put computers together, knew DOS inside and out, wrote assembler code, etc., I can relate to what is being said.

But I applaud Apple's approach. Why? Because I've seen humanity, and most people -- the vast majority -- do not want to know how things work. That itch that hackers have is not shared by most people. Does this lead to the dumbing down of society? No, society was dumb to begin with. The hackers thought they could raise society up from this level by showing them how to hack computers, but most people couldn't care less.

So what do we do with a society that does not care? The hacker says give 'em the hacking tools and let them learn anyway. Steve Jobs said, no, give them a simpler device and let it work for them.

    (edited for brevity)

So why must we insist that Macbooks be completely open, or that the Mac App Store be wide open to anyone who wants to put whatever junk they want inside? The walled garden approach taken by Apple (and almost everything else in our society -- TV, book publishing, sports teams, you name it) is a recognition that we are all different, not everyone wants to hack things, some people simply want to use a tool to do whatever appeals to them.

I'd rather live in a world where Apple creates powerful but simple devices that empower even the tech illiterate, than to live in a world of complicated devices that only a small percentage dare to use. The hackers will always be among us, and hackable devices will always be with us, so don't complain about one company that decided to market to the other 90% of humanity in ways that please the customer very much.

Great post. Just one thing (or maybe 2?)

I never said I didn't like what Apple has done or that the technology isn't great.

What I was stating is that Apple, along with other companies contribute to the dumbing down of society. And then put themselves in a position to speak down to you (ie today's quote by Steve Jobs) about educating the customer.

I don't pretend to have all the answers. One of my majors was in Speech Communications. There's a lot of validity to professionals using language to subjugate and/or exclude other members of society in conversation. The language doctors, lawyers, auto mechanics, you name it all have their own vocabulary which excludes the average person. This also adds "mystique" and credence to the information they state.

So when I say that Apple and other companies are contributing to the dumbing down of society - I say that without prejudice or judgment - but merely a statement of fact. And pretty incontrovertible at that.

Part of the blame goes to Apple and their money grubbing ways, in that they want a 30% cut of gross sub $. This makes it far less attractive for publishers to do this. Also, I too would love a unified model, but I am sure Apple would also want a slice of the action here as well.

Please, this is the same or less then pay subscription resellers. Then they have to actually print out a copy and mail it to you.

People who know nothing about publishing should stop commenting on the 30%...

Oh good! Finally! I used to enjoy drinking Budvar, Plzen, etc. and I wasn't thrilled when I moved to the US that Anheuser-Busch would be able to market the lemonade under the same brand. Cheers!
Hey! There's no need to sully the name of lemonade here!
Personally, I wouldn't serve Bud to my worst enemy.
I would. I think it would pair well with chili made out of his parents.
It tastes moldy and gross, and smells like dirty feet.

Having read this, I don't think I'll ever follow a food or beverage recommendation from you.

Many folks on this forum seem to use and rely on iDVD. I'm in that group.

I know that the world is much larger than this forum, and therefore the percentage of iDVD users to all Mac users is in fact very small. But...

If Apple does drop iDVD it will be another example of blantant disregard for customer's requests.

This may be obvious for many, but for me, it will be the final confirmation that Apple has moved on from the "digital hub" strategy of 1998 - 2007.

Remember when they made all this cool software to help sell Macs? With iPhone and iPad success this is simply not required any more.

I dont think this is right - they're not moving away from the digital hub, they're recreating a different digital hub - Apple isn't necessarily thinking how do we facilitate the creation of dvds so people can make home videos and share them with friends - they're going to the root - what's the best way of distributing videos - right now, upload to the internet is much faster and much more widely used then DVD burning.

Don't forget that in 1998 they dropped the floppy and people had the same attitude you do now. It's great being an Apple customer, they are on the frontline of new technology but they do drop fading technology first too. Pretty soon the usb drive itself will be dropped from the macs as well - what will be the alternative? idk - for flash drives maybe phones will be portable flashdrives connected through wifi or something - by the time they get rid of the superdrive all apple software will be either download or usb stick - no need - people will complain - 7 years later compaq computers wont have them either and we'll be laughing at them for finally catching up although they will then be behind. I have nothing against iDVD but like i said earlier it wont disappear, support will still be available for 3 years or so and iDVD will not disappear from your apps.

Anyway my point is i don't think apple is ignoring their user base - Steve Jobs said at one point "It's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them."

In other words, they might be replacing the software with something that does that job better, and the job is not creating DVDs, the job is distributing media in a beautiful way - maybe we will see the an app in iLife that was rumored before about making something like the Movie extras, with menus and other content - similar to iDVD but then its to upload or stick somewhere else or on your apple tv or on your iphone or ipad - i don't know, i don't work for apple - that's why i pay them, to think for me and show me what i want, cause i don't know. I have ideas as to where things might end up but i really don't know for sure.

    My 2 cents.

The BBC are reporting the following:

"Looking forward, 2007 is likely to be one of the most exciting new product years in Apple's history," Mr Jobs added.

Either he's trying to put us off the scent, or it looks like there'll be nothing too exciting for the rest of the year.

I agree with all of these posts about pricing. My suggestion: stop buying stuff...or start pirating again. THAT seems to get their attention. All price point talk is irrelevant to them...they dont care how unhappy we are - unless we force them to change.

It's a phone, they all are the same. I have not been impressed with the hardware of a cell phone ever. But we know it wil be the iPod OS, it will be white, it will work with iTunes, and it will sync your contacts, etc. Oh, and I bet the corners will be rounded.

Unless it has more than: GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UTMS and is a world phone, has two cameras, a keyboard, an expansion slot, can play movies, and music, and can work with spreadsheets, word documents, has WIFI B/G and have bluetooth, they have not done anyhting that a couple of other companies have done. Take a Motorola POS and slap an Apple log on it, and put this rumor to sleep.

The only things Apple has over anyone else any more, is their OS. Their hardware is like everyone elses hardware.

PS Lets not forget email and web access.

So, some crazy bitch climbs on the hood of your car to keep you from leaving and you just have to put up with that?

I'm sorry, I'm not saying the guy should get a free pass, but at some point her own idiocy has to bear some of the blame for this.

Yeah, I guess you do gotta "put up with that" unless you plan on killing the woman

errr, maybe I should have included this piece of the article:

The wild ride happened several days after Carroll was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance, Osborn said.

Police received a phone call on Feb. 23 from a witness who reported that Carroll had climbed into a 6-foot-deep trash bin in Manteca and was threatening to drown himself in the five inches of water that had collected at the bottom, Osborn said.

"We went out there and talked to him for about an hour and he was obviously on some kind of drugs," Osborn said

The dude has issues, and took off with his wife clinging to the hood of his car. If she tried to roll off she may could have been killed! But hey, let's go ahead and blame the victime here.
