FYI, EVERY application run in OSX natively takes advantage of multi-cpus.
Even on a G4, OSX will make every attempt to load the CPUs evenly no matter the application. There are only a few very rare instances where the work can't be split up, and most of them are limited to photoshop's outdated tools.
Nope, the app has to be specifically multi-threaded to see more than 1 core, it doesn't matter what OS X does. All OS X does is allow apps to do this and sends different threads to different cores. But if the app can't see more than 1 core all its data will only go to 1 core.

Wow, lots of miscellaneous comments, but to answer your questions directly, I've been maintaining several powermac G4s and G5s in a lab and here are my observations:
Long time PPC user here on a budget looking to retire my G4 and buy a G5 on ebay. I am noticing a bit of a slow down on my trusty powermac G4.
Specs...
PowerMac G4 867 single
1.25gb ram
10.4.11/classic
2 fx cards for two old monitors
I was planning on running this thing until it died but it just won't die ;). I do notice a bit of a slow down while on the web and playing online java and flash games, iTunes taking longer to load and do anything. :apple: no longer supporting Tiger is getting to me. Plus the boot drive has only 10GB free so I can't really use iMovie anymore. I did everything I know to keep it up to speed; permissions, check to see if I'm paging (I rarely do), run scripts, and even opened it and cleaned out all the dust and cat hair. While I wouldn't call it a dog, I do think it's age is showing. I just ran geekbench and got a 502.

I agree the G4's don't seem to die. If I had a choice, I'd have at least one maxed out G4. You can still get processor upgrades for the G4 on e-bay and possibly some on-line sellers. I've upgraded the processor in 2 Cubes and they have both worked very well.
As for your questions:
1. Reliability: One of the early posters gave the repair statistics for various G5 models, and I would concur with the same experience. Our early 2x2GHz flaked out for a long time and finally stopped working. Several 2x2.7GHz liquid cooled leaked. Several G5s would/will power themselves up from being off for no apparent reason. Also, watch out for video cards that are fan cooled because they are now old and the fans will die.
2. Fan noise: the G5 is louder. Partly because it has more fans and partly because it tends to ramp them up when ever there is more than minimal load on the CPU. At full blast (which does happen) you think you'd have a room fan on high - that's how loud they can get. If you are doing a lot of cpu intensive stuff or even opening and closing things often you'll hear the fans cycle up and down often. For me, it's annoying.
For me, except for a few features such as stacks, quick look, and time machine, I consider 10.4 a superior operating system as compared to 10.5. You won't notice it on a G5, but if you put 10.5 on a G4 it will run slower, and may cause other problems.
So, if you are considering a G5 vs. maintaining/upgrading a G4, I'd seriously look at upgrading your G4. In particular max out your RAM, and look for a dual processor upgrade. For some applications your single 867 MHz CPU is inferior to a dual 500 MHz cpu. Here are some processor upgrades at OWC:
http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=156&type=Processor
Once upgraded, you could run 10.5 if you really wanted to.

She is on the hood, and you are prevented from moving.
What the Hell do you call that??A problem. He should have called the police if there was no other way to extricate himself. Driving at 100mph with someone clinging to the front of the car is simply not an acceptable option.
Both should be thrown in jail and left to rot.Again, he should have called the police. What should she be charged with? Is she or is she not the victim of attempted murder?

Wow... wouldn't that be awesome!? And hopefully free! I need a GPS like once a year in my car, so I would not want to buy a separate device or an app. A cheap or free solution would rock!
And since you take your phone with you when you leave your car, you don't have to worry about anyone breaking into your car to steal your GPS... :D

Actually, if they would fix the bugs in iCal I'd be happy :D
I would expect tighter intregration for the new iCal server, and other backend stuffs, maybe some professionalizing of the interface.
 you could import iphoto calenders.....:D  :p

the iPhone has the be the biggest rumor engine of them all.
Come now, the Powerbook G5 is the biggest rumor engine.
what does "(MVNO) on Cingular's network" mean ? In my area, Cingular absolutely STINKS.. even the city council called in Cingular reps to #$@# them out.
What did the city officals think they were going to accomplish? This is cell phone service, there are no gaurantees of service quality enforced by law and a cell phone is by no means a necessity of life. If the service sucks, why doesn't everyone in town change carriers? That's what the free market is about.
i always thought they'd be the guys who released an unlocked, unbranded, un-network affliated phone. I think that would be the smartest way to go. Drop in a SIM and go.
Yup, yup. That's what I'm waiting for. I'm not going to go through the hassle of porting my number just to get an iPhone and I'm not interested in being a second-class citizen on someone else's network. I'm not on contract, I like my current plan, and aren't most MVNO's prepaid?

Best Buy hasn't officially said anything about how the pre-order process will work or when it will start, but im sure they will announce something before the 15th.
Well, they certainly should. Can't believe such a mega-retailer's missing out on the opportunity. I think even Wal-Mart's taking pre-orders (tho' I'm not sure, really). Ask you phone department manager. FWIW, I'm pre-ordering at AT&T on Tuesday (15th), or maybe the Apple Store if they have the same pickup-with-no-waiting-in-line policy.

Appointee...??? What are you talking about, it's not a position of office!!
Fact is in most places they probably get paid more than the teachers!
What school districts are you dealing with? I have yet to see a IT position that hasn't been filled by some teacher union's or school board member's relative.
You are right though, they make far too much money for the level of idiocy they exhibit.

I'd suggest contacting a large post-production house and seeing if they'll show you how they do it.
My son works at a big place in NYC and I've seen their machine room (mostly Apple). His outfit does what you're talking about, 24/7, with access all over N America and Europe, both for the editors and their clients.
I would suppose that any good-sized house does the same, and since you're specifically doing video -- well, that's what the post houses do for a living.
Sometimes imitation is an excellent solution.

But insight on when somethings going to happen isnt the singular, or even the primary, purpose of these discussions. Theyre an opportunity to talk about what MAY BE released and what sort of functionality/design it will have, how it will work, what the target market (beside us) will be, etc.
Exactly...they're basically a big group of people getting together and drooling and hoping at least some bit comes true.
And oh my goodness is an iPhone super drool-worthy! I'm getting concerned about how soon I'll be able to get one seeing as everyone and his dog wants one.
And I'm still waiting on that g5 powerbook...it's my Godot. (Or at least an MBP w/a 12" or smaller screen)

Unless you are suggesting something has changed in the last two years what has the date of the article got to do with it,if it has changed please supply a source(no your relatives won't do).If you insist on presenting your personal prejudices as fact this discussion will go nowhere.I'm still waiting for a source for the 800000 people who can work but don't by the way.
Okay, the article I read a while ago. But here it is: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/conservative/2176336/Incapacity-benefit-claimed-by-more-than-800000.html
The don't want to work, but can work, went a little far, but please read, it's interesting. I was getting more to the point of welfare dependancy. Anyhow, it's best I don't reply, I havent' slept since my night shift, around 27 hours now. So best not for me to try and debate things. On that note, sleep time. Zz

What are you basing these statements on? I thought Japan would be one of the most prepared industrialized countries. They had an early earthquake warning system that probably saved countless lives. I don't think any other country has such a system. I suspect that if a similar rash of disasters hit a similarly populated area of America or England, the damage and death toll would have been much worse IMO.
If anything, Japanese people tend to be over caution. All elementary school kids must wear helmets when walking to and from school by law. I thought that was absurd when I lived there but they are inclined to be extremely cautious.
The nuke plant operator Tepco has been in bed with the government agency which regulates it. The excuse Tepco has been saying is that the tsunami is not what they had expected. But, there has been some warning that such a tsunami (and a preceding earthquake) is indeed possible; but, Tepco decided to ignore those warnings with a wink-wink from the regulator. I don't comment on the wisdom of the elders (as I am not a believer you gain wisdom as you age; some old people are totally out of their wits and scares heck out of me when I think they are out and about on the roads I use).
The Japanese tend to be cautious if they have been told to be so by the authority figures (elders and government people), which is typical of the conformist society. But, as everyone knows, the government bureaucrats and the quasi government sponsored enterprises such as power companies are often "run" by less-than-competent people (important distinction: I used "run" in this sentence, as the top management tends to make decisions in Japan).
As far as the natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsumanis, the public just needs to be cognizant of the risk where they are living. I mean, if you are living a low-lying area near the past tsunami disaster areas, you need to be mindful of that when you buy properties and live in that area. In Tokyo, the building codes have been beefed up and I have not heard any major building collapse in the Tokyo metro area because of this earthquake (which I call the "preparedness.") The Tohoku area which was hit hard by this earthquake was not well-protected because its ocean side barriers were not high enough to begin with.
PS: I have not seen elementary school kids wearing hard hats while commuting in Japan. They wear school caps.
