Grab your espresso maker and get ready to stay up watching hours of feel-good films. Films tell stories and these stories can be dramatic, or autobiographical, or a fantasy. They can be happy, sad, thought-provoking and more. These stories, with all of their dimensions, provoke feelings within each and every one of us. Films have a way of allowing us to feel a wide range of emotions and really connect with a story. One of the best types of films are those that leave the viewer feeling happy. These films are called ‘feel-good’ films.
The following is a short list of some films that are sure to leave the audience feeling good.
1. Far and Away

In this film, Tom Cruise is a poor Irish boy and Nicole Kidman is a rich Irish girl living in Ireland in the 1890’s. They dislike each other when they first meet. However, they both dream of leading better lives. They both hear rumors that America is a rich land, full of opportunity. So they go to Boston. They find themselves quite unhappy in America. After many toils and troubles, they end up going their separate ways. Both soon lead separate lives, but they miss one another. Finally, during the Land Run of 1893, they find a plot of land together and both confess their love for one another. In the end, they have each other, which matters more than anything else in the world.
2. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

This film is about a young girl named Belle who dreams of adventure. Her father gets lost one day on the way to a fair and ends up trapped in an enchanted castle. A formidable beast is holding the father prisoner. This beast was once a mean and selfish prince. As punishment for his selfishness, an enchantress transformed the young prince into a beast. He can only turn human again if he falls in love, and earns her love in return.
Belle goes to this castle in order to rescue her father. He is freed while she remains prisoner. Over time, the Beast and Belle begin to fall in love with each other. The Beast is learning to love.
The townspeople hear of the Beast from a jealous man who’s pursuing Belle. The townspeople storm the castle in order to kill the Beast, fearing that the Beast will harm them. As the Beast lies dying, Belle confesses her love. The Beast magically turns back to his human form, and the two live happily ever after.
3. When Harry Met Sally

Billy Crystal plays Harry and Meg Ryan plays Sally. The two meet after graduating from the University of Chicago in 1977. They drive together to New York City, where Sally is starting a career and Harry is starting a job. Both have different views on relationships. Sally believes that a man and a woman can be friends without sex. Harry believes that a man and a woman cannot be friends – sex would always get in the way.
After many years the two continually bump into each other. Each one has different relationship experiences. The two eventually become very close friends. Then one night, they sleep together.
This brings awkwardness to their friendship. Finally, one New Years Eve, Harry confesses that he loves Sally. The two end up marrying.

Diane Lane plays Frances Mayes, a writer living in San Francisco. One day, she writes a bad review of a book. The author of this book is angry, and reveals to Frances that her husband is cheating on her. Frances gets a divorce, moves into a dumpy apartment and becomes depressed.
Her life changes when she goes on a tour of Italy. She spontaneously buys a villa in Cortona, and her life turns around. She struggles through many hardships, but in the end finds the happy life that she is looking for.
5. Pretty Woman

Edward Lewis (played by Richard Gere) is a lonely and successful businessman. He drives along Hollywood Boulevard one night, and stops to ask for directions. A prostitute named Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) offers to take him to his destination. When he gets to his destination, he asks Vivian to be his escort for the entire week. She agrees as long as she gets paid well. And she certainly does, with access to his credit cards.
The two soon begin to fall in love. At one point Vivian feels insulted by the way Edward treats her. Edward’s lawyer, Philip (Jason Alexander), is slowly becoming frustrated with Edward as a businessman.
Philip physically attacks Vivian out of anger and frustration. Edward helps Vivian after this assault. Vivian feels that she must move to San Francisco to get her life together. Edward, who loves Vivian, catches Vivian at her apartment before she leaves, and the two kiss
