Sindhu Menon, who has wowed fans in her Tamil(Eram), Telugu and Malayalam films, is going beyond regional cinema. And we’re not talking Bollywood, but two international projects here. The actress, who’s shuttling between the UK and the US for the first as-yet-untitled project, says, “This Hollywood project was offered to me in 2007, for which the paperwork came through in October. I also have another English film in the pipeline, which will be launched in July and will go on the floors in October,” she reveals. The first film, says Sindhu, is a Brad Peter directorial about an Indian girl who falls in love with an Englishman. “The film captures the problems faced by the girl in the relationship. What’s special about this film is that they show how the man is ready to do anything for the girl.
I just finished the first 15 days of filming and it’s gone off brilliantly,” she says. Sindhu says she bagged the role entirely by chance. “I was surprised when I got this offer as no one on the team had seen any of my films. They just read an interview of mine and liked my picture. That’s how I got this film,” she says. But Sindhu has to change her body image for the role. “I’m on a weight gain programme for the next two months. They want me to be chubby.
After that, I have to get back to working out,” says Sindhu. This doesn’t mean that Sindhu’s turned her back on Indian cinema. She’s got two Telugu films that she’s currently shooting for and is also considering some Tamil scripts. Why isn’t she doing any Kannada films, considering that she started out as a child artiste in Sandalwood? “I prefer to work where I’ve been respected for my roles. But people here still treat me like a child. I only ever get recognition when I do films in other languages. I also feel that women-oriented films have taken off well in Tollywood and Kollywood, but not that much here,” she says.
