A R Rahman loses 82nd Oscar race.

A R Rahman, the music genius who won two Grammys for his compositions in Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ earlier this year, failed to get a nomination for 82nd Academy Awards to be held on March 7.

Although A R Rahman’s number ‘Na Na’ from his Hollywood flick ‘Couples Retreat’ had been short listed for consideration but got ousted from the final list by the likes of ‘Almost there’ from ‘The Princess and the Frog’ by Randy Newman, ‘Take it All’ from ‘Nine’ by Maury Yeston and others. The music maestro from India was competing with these renowned composers for the category of ‘Best Original Song’, but could not surpass them despite of being a hot favorite among the audience.

Now, India has lost its all hopes of getting any Oscars this year as its official entry ‘Harishchandrachi Factory’, a Marathi flick, had already been ousted from the best foreign language category. Sources say that A R Rahman is a bit disappointed by the rejection as the song had his son Ameen lending his voice for the first time ever for a number.

However, Indian hopes are being kept alive (if it can be said so) in the short film category by an American director Gregg Helvey’s film ‘Kavi’. The film is in Hindi and has won the nomination in live action category. The film talks about child labor and sketches the story of a boy who is prevented from playing cricket and going to school for working in a kiln.

Though the director is American but the film talks about India and its people and is in Hindi, so the Indians can take solace if it wins at the Oscars. However, the ouster of A R Rahman’s ‘Na Na’ is definitely a bigger blow and will hurt the Indian pride, who had come to believe that AR Rahman was almost infallible.

The Hollywood flick ‘Couples Retreat’ is about four couples who go on a resort to lead a peaceful life for the duration of their vacation, and A R Rahman’s number ‘Na Na…’ fitted in this scheme of thing beautifully.
