I had a fabulous time today painting my little antique French shelf. The
course was fantastic and I highly recommend it! I had always struggled to paint furniture before and I now realise it's because I'd been using the wrong paint! All this time I have been using eggshell which is really difficult to paint with when I should have been using emulsion! Anyway, we got to choose what colour to paint our piece from a selection of Farrow and ball paints, and whatever technique we wanted to try. I chose to paint the base in F&B blue gray and then mix a pink (not sure which one) with an acrylic scumble glaze to get a wash effect. I then sanded down all the leading edges and the sides and the top and lightly brushed burnt siena acrylic over the sanded down areas to give a 'dirty' effect.

I am so pleased with the results and now that I know how easy it is to do I'm going to paint all my Ikea wooden furniture so that it all matches and looks old. I'll add nice ceramic handles and they'll look like they're 100 years old by the time I've finished with them! :-)
I think I'll go on the lamp shade course next because I have really been struggling to find decent lamp shades!
